Happy Independence Day! And thank you to all those who have served our country both here and overseas! Let us remember those who gave their lives. Now as an American I recall the birth of our country on this day. For the most part, I will be home watching my house against any possible misuse of fireworks by my neighbors' children. Perhaps I will watch a fireworks show on cable tv this evening.
As an Oblate, I celebrate this day as the feast of St. Precopius, Abbot. As a Catholic, I also acknowledge the feast day of St. Elizabeth of Portugal on the new calendar and the Commemoration of all Holy Popes, the feast of our Lady of Refuge and the memorial of St. Theodore, bishop and martyr, on the old, although this year my Tridentine calendar shows the day as a feria. Today is Saturday, the day of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the first Saturday of the month. This is July, the month of the Precious Blood.
We American Catholics have much to celebrate and to honor, and much to pray for.
